10:34 am - Got the cabinet!
Hard to believe, but after 3 months, the bathroom cabinet finally arrived. I am still mad as hell at SF Cabinets. Total jokers and liars, and I will be happily telling everyone I know who needs cabinets who they should NOT use.

10:31 am - Man fined for using a dummy to poach on commuter lane
(11-04) 09:40 PST NOVATO -- A 28-year-old Petaluma man was pulled over Wednesday and slapped with a $351 fine for using a kickboxing dummy dressed in a Miami Dolphins windbreaker and baseball cap to poach on the commuter lane.

At least he put some thought into it. And I hope to god he was going at least 75mph and closing every gap he could. I ride a moto and can legally use the HOV lane. It pisses me off when ppl who shouldn't be there use it, but when they do, god help them if they get in the lane and drive slowly. Then I unleash the razorblade talons of death in the sides of my boots and key their cars as I drive split past them.

(OK that was just a fantasy)

08:44 pm - Cabinets, JBL Creature
So this idiot called me an hour after he was supposed to be ringing my doorbell to tell me that he couldn't deliver it in the rain because it was freshly painted and might spot. Umm... since this cabinet was supposed to be here 10 weeks ago, I don't understand why it would be freshly painted. Whatever. I told him if he had it at my house at 9a.m. Friday then we would have a complete transaction and small claims court would not be necessary. We shall see...

Got my JBL Creature speakers today, and they are pretty kick ass. They have static switched for volume control that provide a tiny but effective clicking noise for feedback. They are really loud and sound very nice. For only $99, I am happy (yeah. i paid full price through apple. they do a nice job of upselling stuff).

04:01 pm - Don't ever do business with SF Cabinets
They ruined my day. I started my day getting into a pissing contest with a company that is 10 weeks late on a single custom cabinet there supposed to build for my bathroom. theoretically it will be delivered tonight, or we will end up in small claims court.

Then I missed my train, so I had to drive to work. Fun stuff. Always puts me in a happy shiny mood.

Then I had meetings pretty much all day long. They will continue through 5, which means I can't leave early to avoid traffic and finish work from home.

Good times. Good times.

12:20 am - Democrats close Senate to push war probe
Oh no. The Dems want to know about those WMDs and the reasons given to go to war with Saddam Hussein who is obviously responsible for the attacks on the World Trade Center and Bill Frist is outraged. "This is an affront to our leadership. It is an affront to the United States of America, and it is wrong."

It's wrong to ask someone why promised answers were never given? I suppose that's probably the case on Planet Frist. Since yelling and being morally outraged is the new black: DEAR BILL FRIST, PLEASE SHUT YOUR PIEHOLE BEFORE YOU DO MORE ILLEGAL JUNK. LOVE, ERIK.

11:28 pm - Mark's Sysinternals Blog: Sony, Rootkits and Digital Rights Management Gone Too Far
Sony has gotten into installing filthy evil spyware on people's machines in yet another new and exciting (and doomed) attempt at DRM. It's practically a virus.

This is not really the most effective way to gain back a taste of the walkman salad days, kids. If you didn't make such fine televisions, I would have nothing to do with you ever again.

DEAR SONY, WHAT THE F**K IS WRONG WITH YOU? LOVE, ERIK.

12:33 pm - PFLAG Seattle and Allies Expose Exploitation of Youth to Persecute Peers
October 26, 2005 - Washington, D.C. - PFLAG is alarmed and angered that a conference called “Groundswell” is targeting our youth in Seattle on October 27th. This offshoot of the widely discredited Exodus International “ex-gay” ministries now appears to be recruiting young people to deliver their dangerous and misguided message in schools. They would have Christian young people become their newest evangelical weapon by training them how to badger their gay, lesbian, bisexual, transgender and questioning (GLBTQ) peers with the message that they can and should “change,” derail Gay/Straight Alliance clubs, challenge or obstruct policies that address anti-GLBTQ harassment at school..." (more)
I'm outraged. It's bad enough that Bush's new SCOTUS nominee overturned an anti-harassment policy enacted to ban unwelcome verbal, written, or physical conduct which offends, denigrates or belittles an individual, and will surely continue this "mind" set if he reaches the court.

Combined with this grassroots campaign by people who claim to be concerned about the well being of children, you have Matthew Shepherd over and over and over again.

I wrote last night about wanting to do more music. I spoke with another musician friend about why exactly it was I walked away from the bright musical future that lay before me. I walked away because a majority of my peers, teachers, and professional contacts... the people I would need to form relationships with in order to thrive... were incredibly homophobic. Explicitly, continuously talking about all the fags, and implicitly... pushing people out that weren't quite right, or lisping and prancing when talking about a delicate phrase or tender chord structure... something that didn't fit the aesthetic of the bebop-mafioso or cock-rock mouth-breathers.

Computers offered an anti-social professional escape for me. I could do things in isolation, and my work could be appreciated remotely. I didn't have to endure the surreptitious or even overt looks, the comments, the freezing out. Even better, it turned out that a large percentage of people in the tech industry were enlightened and intelligent enough not to care who I choose to love. Its a complete non-issue in the Bay Area. The angry pink triangle tattoo on my leg isn't necessary, and I like it that way.

When we teach children to disrespect their peers, those children turn into adults that disrespect their peers. Or hurt them professionally. Or beat them. Or kill them.

12:40 am - Gotta play again...
I've been listening to some interesting new music, and looking at interesting new people and doing different things. I am starting to get a serious hankering to play again. I miss it. Badly.

Happily, Stacia is having similar thoughts, and she came over tonight to talk about putting something together. I'm hoping we can figure out a way to make some interesting music happen. We're both into playing live again, and I'm into recording (It's the frustrated Steely Dan horn section in me).

I'm thinking about the sounds of Royksopp, Groove Armada, and Zero 7... and a particular song from Earth Wind & Fire: September. Lush harmonies, searing melodies, and slow burning grooves that you can't help but air-drum to.

Debate rages on use of cervical cancer vaccine / While almost 100% effective, some contend use condones teen sex

A new vaccine that protects against cervical cancer has set up a clash between health advocates who want to use the shots aggressively to prevent thousands of malignancies and social conservatives who say immunizing teen-agers could encourage sexual activity.

If you're not outraged, you're not paying attention.

12:44 am - Daddy's little hummer
A hummer that got high centered on the safety rail that keeps pedestrians from falling onto the highway below the overpass. The 280 South Mariposa exit at 18th and Pennsylvania is notorious. People wreck on it about every 2 months. Only 3 times have I seen a car get high centered though. Pretty funny (since everyone was all right).

I keep seeing ads for Wasabi Tuna during The Daily Show and The Colbert Report. Looks like fun. Anything that has Alana Ubach and Anna Nicole Smith is on my list of must-haves.

10:51 pm - DVD + HandBrake = iPod Love
Been trying to figure out how to get my own DVDs to my iPod. The right stuff is called HandBrake, and take a look at this easy tutorial. Note: Don't use the AVC/H.264 encoding (as logic would suggest). Use MPEG-4 Video / AAC Audio. iTunes will import it and spit it back to your video enabled iPod without complaint.

Sadly, I have run across instances of DVDs that have multiple episodes, but which HandBrake reads as a single file. The entire thing is ripped into a single chunk. This wouldn't be horrible, except that the audio disappears after the first episode. Grr.

Whatever. I have entertainment on the go, and that makes me happy.

06:28 pm - Rachel Kann Holla
I recently discovered an awesome, addictive podcast called Fox and the City on the new Yahoo! podcasts site. It's the work of a poet/comedian/artfag named Ragan Fox, and I highly recommend it. It spans news commentary, queer issues, politics, and lots and lots of general offensiveness and fun. Ragan's site is Raganfox.com.

He occasionally has a guest named Rachel Kann, and they do great show together. They have spun off a new show called Eat Bird! that features the two of them doing their general snarkiness. The most recent episode (Eat Bird! Episode 6) was a Rachel-only show. The first half was more or less repulsive (read the episode description), but near the end she plays one of her songs - a spoken word piece that fucking rocks. Rachel's site is Inspirachel.com.

06:27 pm - I got my new iPod
It's heavenly. I finally have my entire music collection + my entire photo collection + about 30G left over for videos.

I only successfully encoded one video, and it took a long time. I was using something called Handbrake to copy and encode a DVD. It doesn't seem to be able to handle a DVD with multiple files. I fed it Family Guy Season 1 and it only got the first episode off the disk. And it created an mp4 which the iPod didn't like. I had to use QuickTime Pro to export it to an m4v, and that took a long time too.

It will take awhile to get the hang of it I suppose. BitTorrent is looking attractive, since it will probably take less time to download something than it would be to rip and encode it off of a DVD (OF MEDIA I ALREADY OWN OF COURSE)

Anyway, it was delightful watching the premiere episode of Family Guy on Caltrain this morning on the way to work.
